JM - Deconstruction of a Digipak

'Together/Apart (Grieves, 2011)

Genre

How is the genre of the track/artist evident?

The clearest message to the audience to show the Artist’s genre is the artist’s costume. This use of mise-ene-scene plays on the conventional apparel of the genre, and its target audience. The artist is shown to be wearing a Hoodie and a Hat which is the typical clothing of 16-25 year old who listens to ‘Hip-Hop’ music. Furthermore the ‘Flat Cap Hat’ that the artist is wearing acts as an indexical sign for the Hip-Hop genre, as this style of hat is often associated with this genre of music. The choice of typography also expresses the artist’s genre, for example the text is all been placed in capitals to show the originality of the artist.

Media Language

What visual techniques are used? How is meaning generated through these techniques?

The most evident visual technique used on this Digipak is the use of colour. Through the album cover very few colours have been used, the most evident being a dull orange. Furthermore the picture of artist gradually develops into a dripping effect. The visual motif of the orange picture developing into the dripping effect has a connotation similar to the image of blood dripping on a flat surface. The connotation on this occasion produces an enigma of emotion. This effect alongside others giving genre impression creates an overall band image of ‘Emotive Hip-Hop’. Studying the album cover at a micro level we noticed the detail of the picture developing into the drip, as well as the effect of the orange colour, which then forces us to study macro issues with the creation of the emotive feeling. Moreover the lack of anything eye catching in the background of the image focuses audience’s attention onto artist. In terms of rule of thirds therefore the artist has been placed in the centre of the image to further focus attention onto the image of the artist.

What linguistic devices have been used?

The title of the album, ‘Together/Apart’ immediately creates a feeling of uncertainty to the audience as it contradicts itself in meaning. The uncertainty will give the audience a desire to find out more about the artist, meaning they will then research the artist further or study the track list, this is therefore an example of successful advertising material.

Representation

How is the artist represented?

The visual techniques established in the image of the artist create an overall feeling of an extraordinary star image. The star image is created through a variety of visual techniques and the actual image of the artist. The artist has his head hung low and his eyes closed leading to an impression of emotion. The visual techniques alongside this emotive expression show the Artist to be extraordinary. However with reference to Dyer’s study of Stars 1998, the artist is also represented as ordinary through Mise-ene-scene, predominately by the use of conventional clothes of the genre. Furthermore the lack of colour on the image also represents the artist as nothing out of the ordinary.

Institution and audience

How might this print text be consumed?

This media text will be predominately consumed through online music stores such as 'Apple Itunes', this is also evident in the design of the album as the artist’s image has been placed on the cover which will lead to a star image being created. Furthermore even if an audience does not purchase the media text, the artist has been advertised to them due to the prominence of the artist’s image.  This media text may also be consumed through special retail outlets. However it is not likely to be consumed within a Newspaper or Magazine due to the incoherence of the text in relation to the type of advert needed for a Newspaper or Magazine.
