JM - Hey Ya music video

Our class undertook a small project to create a music video for ‘Hey Ya – Outkast’. We first split the song into smaller sections and divided the task between us, working in our project groups. We would then eventually bring all the sections together for editing to produce on music video.

This would be our first effort in the creation of a music video so we therefore attempted to tackle some key issues we thought may trouble us, for example lip-syncing. Furthermore we also had the opportunity to use a numerous pieces of new equipment including a fish-eye lens, curved mini motion cam, cam-frame, track & dolly and also the use of a green screen.

We were keen to use the Fish Eye lens as we are planning on using this equipment for our music video. We therefore tried numerous different shot types to develop our understanding on which shots would look best with the fish eye lens in our music video.

Our group also benefited from the use of the track & dolly because it gave us the opportunity for smooth movement in our video which we are planning on emulating in our actual music video when the protagonist actor is travelling along the street.

We found the whole task very useful as it allowed us to investigate the difficulties of music video such as lip-syncing as well as working on similar shots to the ones we will hopefully use in our own music video. The biggest lesson from this small project was the need of continuous camera movement and quick cutting rate. This means that we will have to plan shots meaning we have a set idea of the amount of shots we will need for the music video.
